The Halo-Halo Network together with Sentro ng Kultura at Wika ng Austria at Pilipinas (Sentro) has partnered with the Philippine Consulate General in Frankfurt (F-PCG) to present the book „Common Diversities: Junge Filipin@s in deutschsprachigen Raum“ for the first time in Germany.
The event, entitled Get to Know Your Children – Perspectives from the 2nd Generation, was held on Saturday, the 5th of November 2022, at 3:00 PM, and was hosted by the F-PCG. Common Diversities, which is an anthology of essays written by second and third generation Filipinos, will be presented in the form of a book reading and panel discussion.
Christian Namiss read passages from his chapter about the relationship the second generation have with the Tagalog language. Andreas Schmitz read from his chapter about understanding his Filipino identity through humanitarian work. And Analie Neiteler read from her chapter about the narratives of the second generation Filipino migrants. Afterwards, the three authors were joined by the book editors, Arlene Castañeda and Ralph Chan for a panel discussion with the audience.

Irgendwann verstand ich, dass Menchen von mir wissen wollten, woher ich kam, weil ich anders aussah als die meisten. Sie fanden vielleicht, dass ich ähnlich aussah wie die geflüchteten Kinder. Sie wussten nicht, wie sie mich einordnen sollten, und das war das erste Mal, dass ich mich so fühlte, als gehöre ich nicht richtig dazu.
Tagalog sprechen zu können ist Teil der Identität. Die Kernaussage der Teilnehmer:innen, die an der Umfrage teigenommen haben, ist eine Nachricht an alle zukünftigen [philippinischen Eltern]. ‘Sprecht mit uns eure Sprache! Lehrt sie uns! Sie ist uns wichtig, denn sie ist Teil unserer Identität.’
Durch den regelmäßigen Kontakt mit philippinischen Partnerorganisationen und durch meinen längeren Auslandseinsatz auf den Philippinen lerne ich immer mehr über die philippinische Kultur, was mir in meiner eigenen Identitätsfindung hilft. Was ich bei allem bisher gelernt habe, ist, dass ich meine Rolle in der Brückenfunktion sehe.
